Renaissance Painting

"VENUS OF URBINO BY TITIAN"

This painting is "Venus of Urbino" created by Titian. It is considered as one of the most famous painting known in Renaissance period as people are driven by the beauty of Venus. Titian’s Venus of Urbino is perhaps his most well-known painting because of its ambiguous meaning. Various interpretations of the woman in the painting include an allegory of marriage, an allegory of eroticism, and a symbol of marital fidelity and motherhood. The interpretation of the strongest validity is the allegory of marriage because the painting was a gift from a husband to a wife, there are elements consistent with marriage found in the painting and finally, Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, is being depicted in the painting. This painting can be described as a “teaching” model for Giulia Varano, who was to become a wife of eroticism, fidelity and motherhood. There is evident eroticism in this painting that served as a reminder that a woman has marital obligations that she needs to fulfill to her husband. There is a strong sensuality of this painting that was consistent with its private, domestic purpose, which was as a gift from husband to wife.

My own recreation of Venus of Urbino

This is my recreation of Titian's painting. I only used watercolor to give colors. I didn't remove her belly fats to represent that women are still attractive even with fats, however I changed the color of her nipple and hair into a darker one - to represent that a woman's body is still beautiful even when having a darker part of  their body. Lastly, I kept her chest part small to represent that a woman's beauty is not based on the size of her chest. Because nowadays people standards of beauty are only fitted bodies and lighter tones. Women are getting bullied for not fitting into modern standards, and for having fats and darker tone of a certain part of their body.

As I am a Traditional artist, it was a challenge for me to recreate Titian's beautiful painting with only using a child's watercolor kit. I am also an Oil paint artist, but this time I have no materials left. However, I really enjoyed this project and I am glad that I made it. In fact, I am thinking of recreating this in Oil painting.

THANK YOU!
